How to Dress for Golf: Stay Cool & Still Look Good
When you think of golf clothes, what do you see? Maybe old, baggy pants and a boring polo shirt. For a long time, golf fashion was not very exciting. The good news is that today, things are very different.
We can now wear clothes that are super comfortable, protect us from the sun, and actually look stylish. You don’t have to look dreary on the golf course! Here is my simple guide on how to dress for golf in Singapore.
The Foundation: The Modern Polo Shirt
Everything starts with a good polo shirt. Forget thick, heavy cotton shirts that trap sweat. Today’s golf polos are made from special “performance” fabrics.
- What to look for: Find a shirt that says “moisture-wicking” or “quick-dry.” This material pulls sweat away from your body to keep you cool and dry.
- Tip: Many brands make great performance polos, you don’t need to buy the most expensive one. For more ideas, you can read my guide on the best budget-friendly golf shirts for the tropics.

My Favorite Part: Pants with Personality
Now, for the part I am most excited about. While many golfers now wear slim, tapered pants, I personally prefer something with a bit more personality and comfort. I am a big fan of pants that are wide, airy, and have prints.
A bold pair of pants with a fun pattern is the easiest way to make your outfit “pop” in pictures and show your style.
..and when it comes to finding pants with a modern, tailored fit, my personal go-to is actually the online retailer ASOS. They have an incredible selection of trendy styles that can be worn at the course.
Why I love them:
- Maximum Comfort: In the Singapore heat, a wider, more airy fit is incredibly comfortable and allows for better airflow. It feels less restrictive than tight-fitting pants.
- They Make a Statement: A cool print—whether it’s plaid, floral, or a geometric pattern—is fun and stylish. It shows you’re not afraid to stand out from the crowd.
- The Style Rule is Simple: The key to wearing printed pants is to keep your shirt simple. If your pants are bold, wear a solid-colored polo shirt (like white, black, or navy). This creates a balanced, fashionable look that isn’t too “busy.”
Of course, on very hot days, a good pair of tailored golf shorts (with or without prints) is also a great choice. Just make sure they are not cargo shorts (with big pockets on the side).

The Smart Layer: Sun Protection
In Singapore, the sun is no joke. Even on cloudy days, you need to protect your skin. A long-sleeve shirt under your polo is a very smart choice.
What to look for: Look for a thin “base layer” shirt with a UPF 50+ rating. They are designed to keep you cool, not hot.
Another option: You can also use UV sun sleeves. These are easy to pull on and off.
Tip: I wrote a full article on this topic. You can learn more in my Guide to sun protection on the course.

The Finishing Touches (The Accessories)
The small things complete the look.
The Hat: A baseball cap is okay, but a wide-brimmed hat is much better for sun protection.
The Belt: A modern braided or webbed belt looks much better than an old leather dress belt.
The Socks: Choose ankle socks or no-show socks for a clean look with shorts.
The Shoes: Spikeless golf shoes are great because they are comfortable to walk in and you can wear them off the course too.

A Simple Rule to Remember
Almost every golf course has a dress code. The rule is simple: wear a collared shirt and no jeans. If you follow the tips above, you will always be welcome at any course in Singapore.
Dressing for golf today is all about looking good, feeling good, and playing good. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to be the most stylish and comfortable person in your group.
