My Franken-Bag: Build a Great Golf Set for Under S$700
You go to a golf shop. The new clubs are very nice. But the price is very high! A new set can be S1,500 or S3,000. For a normal person, this is too much.
So, I want to show you a better way. This is my guide to building a “Franken-Bag.”
Why “Franken”? Because we build it from many different parts, like Frankenstein! It is a fun name for a golf set that we build ourselves from different brands.
Our Goal: Build a full Franken-Bag for under S$700.

Rules for Hunting Clubs
Before you buy, remember these simple rules:
- Look for “Game Improvement” Clubs: These clubs are made to help normal players. They are more forgiving if you don’t hit the ball perfectly.
- Check the Club Condition: Look at the pictures. Are the grips okay? Is the shaft straight with no dents? Are the lines (grooves) on the wedges still sharp?
- Best Age is 5-8 Years Old: Clubs from 5-8 years ago are the best value. They have good technology but the price is much lower.
Where to Hunt for Your Franken-Bag Parts
Here are the best places in Singapore to search for your clubs.
Online Marketplaces (Best for Low Prices)
- Carousell: This is the #1 best place to find used golf clubs. Almost everything is on Carousell.
- Tip: Search for specific models like “Ping G30 driver” or “Mizuno JPX irons”. Always check the seller’s rating. If you can, meet the seller to see the club before you pay.
- Facebook Marketplace: Also a very popular place to buy and sell. Many people post here and on Carousell at the same time.
- Tip: Be careful of scams. It is always best to meet in person. Never transfer money for a delivery unless you trust the seller 100%.
Physical Shops (Good to See Before You Buy)
- Far East Shopping Centre: This building on Orchard Road has many small golf shops. Many of them sell new and used clubs.
- Tip: The prices here might be a bit higher than Carousell because they are running a shop. But it is a great place to go and hold the clubs to see how they feel.
- Your Local Driving Range: Sometimes, the pro shop at a driving range will have a small corner with used clubs for sale.
- Tip: It’s always a good idea to ask the staff. You might find a surprise deal.
How to Build Your Franken-Bag, Club by Club
1. The Driver (Your Budget: S$150)
What to look for: You just need a driver that helps you hit the fairway. Look for forgiving models like TaylorMade M2, Ping G30, or Callaway Rogue.
- Tip: A headcover is not important. Just make sure the shaft is “Regular” flex if you are not sure.
2. The Fairway Wood (Your Budget: S$80)
What to look for: You only need one to start. A 5-wood is usually easier to hit than a 3-wood. Cobra F-series or a TaylorMade M-series are good choices.
- My Tip: If you see ugly marks on top of the club, you can ask for a lower price. It doesn’t change how the club plays.
3. The Hybrid (Your Budget: S$70)
What to look for: Hybrids are a lifesaver. They are much easier to hit than a 3-iron or 4-iron. Adams IDEA hybrids are famous for being good value.
- Tip: A 22° to 24° hybrid is very useful. You will use it a lot.
4. The Irons (5-iron to PW) (Your Budget: S$250)
What to look for: This is the most expensive part. Look for a 6-club set (5, 6, 7, 8, 9, PW). Make sure they are “cavity-back” for more forgiveness. Good models are Mizuno JPX, Ping G-series, or TaylorMade Burner.
- Tip: A little bit of wear is okay. But if the middle of the club face is brown or has deep scratches, maybe find another one.

Mazel Iron – Your go-to choice for building a personalized ‘Franken-Bag’ one iron at a time

Get the pure feel and immediate feedback of a classic blade putter, without the premium price tag
5. The Wedges (Your Budget: S$80 for two)
What to look for: You need a Sand Wedge (SW, 56°). A Gap Wedge (GW, 52°) is also very good to have. Look for Cleveland, Titleist Vokey, or Callaway Mack Daddy.
- My Tip: The lines (grooves) must feel a bit sharp. If they are smooth, the ball will not spin.
6. The Putter (Your Budget: S$50)
What to look for: This is about what you like. Don’t worry about the brand. Just find a shape that feels good. Odyssey White Hot putters are classic and easy to find for a good price.
- Tip: Before you buy online, go to a real shop and hold a few different putters. See if you like a “blade” shape or a “mallet” (the big ones) shape.
